Scion is frakkin’ sweet
Warning: gamer post ahead. Feel free to ignore this if you’re not into RPGs.
So I was listed as one of the designers of the White Wolf game Scion, but actually I was only there for a few of the initial design meetings. Up until last night, I’d never actually played the game. It won the Ennies award for Best Game though, and I’d been meaning to check it out, so my friend Dustin ran a game for me and Lydia. My god, I see why it won best game.
The premise is that it’s the modern day, the Titans (of Greek/Roman myth) are coming back, and the rest of the gods are fighting against this because the Titans want to blow everything up or some shit. Except the other gods can’t fight directly, because Fate won’t let them have a direct hand in things. So you get to play the offspring of a god (hence the title, Scion) — there are a number of different pantheons to choose from, from Greek gods/goddesses, to Vodoun, to Norse, to Aztec and beyond.
I won’t bore you by telling you about my character, but the game was absofuckinlutely fantastic, and in fact might be one of my new favorite game. The flavor and feel of the game is very actiony and modern-epic, the art is phenomenal, and the powers are kickass. The only downside is that the powers aren’t very well balanced, but I can overlook that because the rest is so completely awesome.
